Second set from groove-laced Grammy magnets.

While rock is only a single element of their peculiarly inclusive pangeneric oeuvre. Black Pumas' broad church strain of psychedelic soul belongs here just as surely as Sly Stone, Prince or, even, Jimi Hendrix.

If 2020’s seven Grammy-netting self-titled debut was an ambitious, uncategorisable kaleidoscope, then what’s this? With Chronicles Of A Diamond, singer/songwriter Eric Burton and guitarist/producer Adrian Quesada have spattered their strikingly polychromatic sonic palette with yet more colour: pastel shades of Paisley Park whimsy here (Gemini Sun) and vivid splashes of a decidedly more seductive hue there (the hypnotically serpentine Sauvignon).

This album captures an even more ambitious side of Black Pumas' languid, characteristically feline take on 21st century pop-rock cross pollination. They’ve arrived where Sly was headed with Stand; touched down at the ultimate destination of the P-Funk Mothership and it’s a singularly engaging soundscape you're strongly recommended to sample.
