Classic 1970s Hawkwind songs used to start like Tangerine Dream and then quickly mutate into chugging Status Quo boogies, and a few tracks here share this structure, like the opener “The Outer Region Of The Universe” and “Neutron Star”. But this latest incarnation of the band, fronted by founder Dave Brock and featuring Thighpaulsandra on synths, is better at maintaining the space-age freakiness.
The title track is a cosmic country groove that recalls the Hitchhiker’s Guide To The Galaxy theme; “The Outer Region Of The Universe” is an appealing ambient workout, while “Co-Pilot” is an ever-mutating bossa nova.
