Tori Amos’ 18th album, In Times Of Dragons, may be her most ambitious concept record yet. Like earlier albums such as Scarlet’s Walk and American Doll Posse, it uses fictional characters and storytelling to explore politics, society and personal identity. This time, Amos frames the album as a metaphorical battle between democracy and tyranny, inspired by what she sees as the erosion of democracy in modern America.

The story follows a narrator escaping her cruel billionaire “Lizard Demon” husband while reconnecting with people from her past. Despite the dark themes, Amos balances the narrative with humor, vivid characters and references to her own career. Musically, the album ranges from sweeping orchestral pieces like “Song Of Sorrow” to energetic pop and rock-influenced tracks. Songs such as “Gasoline Girls,” “Pyrite” and “St. Teresa” showcase her diverse arrangements, blending harpsichord, electric guitar, synths and intricate keyboards.

The album closes with “Stronger Together,” featuring backing vocals from Amos’ daughter, Tash. The song emphasizes solidarity and emotional support during difficult times, reflecting Amos’ long-standing ability to offer comfort through her music. Even amid the turmoil described throughout the album, In Times Of Dragons ultimately carries a message of resilience and hope.
