As its name suggests, Gary Numan’s new one is ferocious and brutal.
Numan’s outlook is bleak, at best, and the sounds he conjures up are similarly menacing.
Ghost Nation’s synths and drums threaten to tear speaker cones as he describes a world of fiery heat and freezing cold, and “My Name Is Ruin” opens with a swirl of distortion and creaking metalwork, its Eastern keys melody dominating instrumental passages. And “It All Began With You” is similarly terrifying, with even its deceptively pretty beginning increasingly ominous, and “Pray For The Pain You Serve” starts with the sound of marching jackboots, before stabs of synth pierce its flurry of beats. Even the quieter tracks, such as “Bed Of Thorns” and the especially Mode-like “The End Of Things”, can’t help but slowly unfurl giant choruses.
It’s the end of the world, and Numan’s on fire.
