Neil had been around the block a few times before his arrival at the heart of the Greenwich Village folk scene.

A staff writer at the Brill Building and songwriter for Buddy Holly and Roy Orbison, he’d performed various styles in different line-ups without any recognized folk credentials.

Nevertheless he produced one of the finest records of the era, which went on to create ripples many years later when Harry Nilsson covered one of the tracks, Everybody’s Talkin’, and it became the theme song for the 1969 movie Midnight Cowboy

Neil, though, was long gone, turning his back on music to devote the rest of his life to the preservation of dolphins.
