Inextricably linked with the movie it was written for (that’s John Hughes’ 1985 teen classic The Breakfast Club, of course), Don’t You (Forget About Me) was actually, according to co-writer Keith Forsey, originally offered to Bryan Ferry before Jim Kerr and co. took it on. The band were initially unenthusiastic about recording the song, being much keener on releasing material that they’d penned themselves.

Simple Minds only relented when Forsey phoned the band up to tell them how much of a fan he was. They then ripped through the song in just three hours in a North London studio, believing it would be a throwaway track for a flop movie. Oh, how wrong they were.
