When you’ve been making records for seven decades, as Dion DiMucci has, the process is as natural as breathing. Come up with an angle for another duets album, bang out a batch of thematically apt tunes with co-writer Mike Aquilina, hook up with a bunch of female artists and let it rip, while multi-instrumentalist/arranger/ co-producer Wayne Hood runs the show.
And voila, like 2020’s Blues With Friends and 2021’s Stomping Ground, everything falls into place. The tracks play to the strengths of Dion’s guests: Susan Tedeschi’s muscular Strat licks enflame “Soul Force”, Shemekia Copeland’s outsized personality smothers “Mama Said” in primal soulfulness, Sue Foley’s wailing harmonies lift “Hey Suzy” and every partner does her thing winningly on this collegial, warm-hearted party record.
