Her name is Brittney Denise Parks. She is a 23-year-old Los Angeles-based singer and violinist known as Sudan Archives. She moves effortlessly within densely layered, glitchy, experimental folk landscapes on her two EPs released last and this year.
She says: “I come from a totally self-taught perspective. I pick up cool-sounding stuff I hear on YouTube and incorporate it into my sound. Irish jigs, Jewish folk music, African fiddle music from Ghana, Burkina Faso, Sudan and North Africa - it all goes through the filter. I know, lots of Africans have been inspired by James Brown and loads of other American music. It’s a two-way street.”
