A restless maverick, Buckley was always hard to pigeonhole. Raised on the blues of Bessie Smith and Billie Holiday, he latched on to the folk boom, playing LA coffee houses, was signed to Elektra and formed a folk-rock band.

This second LP was a major leap of faith for both Buckley and the label, mixing poetry and song in ambitious fashion. Material like I Never Asked To Be Your Mountain and No Man Can Find The War seemed to penetrate deep into his soul in a way songwriting didn’t tend to do at the time.

Buckley died in 1975 from a drug overdose, becoming something of a cult hero — a short career with a tragic ending later mirrored by his son Jeff Buckley.
