In his career's first decade, Paolo Nutini transformed from upbeat indie-pop troubadour to nascent heritage rock artist. After a hiatus since the analogue maturity of his third and most recent album, 2014's Caustic Love, this epic 70-minute comeback doubles down on his timeless, fastidious rock authenticity.
Nutini wails like Robert Plant over clashing guitars and Patricia Arquette's “you’re so cool" line from True Romance on the opening, Zep- like Aftermath, then shifts into smooth, bittersweet 80s MOR on Radio.
He roams through Television-edged post-punk gospel on Lose It, ambling Johnny Cash romanticism on Abigail, and a wash of Moog, birdsong and Sunset Beach electric guitar peals on Take Me Take Mine, his fallen angel West of Scotland vocal cutting through every song like butter.
Like all the best overambitious double albums, there isn’t a minute you’d trim.
