The Followill clan continue to close in on their fickle mojo on studio album No.8, moving from the renewed promise of 2021’s When You See Yourself to a leaner, more limber sonic palette.
Producer Kid Harpoon (Harry Styles’ “As It Was”, Miley Cyrus’ “Flowers”) avoids the ornate flourishes of recent albums and zeroes in on KOL’s core strengths: DNA-rooted interplay that turns on cousin Matthew’s heady guitar forays and Jared’s nimbly hyperactive basslines, which give Caleb a springy launching pad for his yearning yelps.
The results range from flights of lysergic beauty on “Rainbow Ball”, “Split Screen” and “Seen” to a burst of jagged, early-days energy on “Nothing To Do”.
For the first time in ages, they’re not overthinking it.
