Two generations of Garfunkels cover Cyndi Lauper, The Beatles and Simon & Garfunkel
Art Garfunkel Jr sounds just like his old man. The 34-year-old possesses a keen, acrobatic voice that’s immediately familiar, especially the way it gains definition the higher he soars. Sr’s voice, however, has deepened with age, losing some of its remarkable range but somehow accruing even more compassion and curiosity.
Even if the orchestrations on their first album together are more sentimental than cinematic, father and son harmonize gloriously, finding new emotions within 20th-century standards - especially their cover of Cat Stevens’ “Father And Son”, whose final line sounds like a bittersweet farewell from one to the other: “I know I have to go”.
