Bittersweet adventures in paradise
Still waters run deep on Lana Del Rey’s second album of 2021 as the perennial outsider adds to her own mythology with a set of drifting piano ballads that allow her rich and profane lyrics to hit home. With long-time foil Jack Antonoff absent, Blue Banisters has a sedate, meandering quality, bar an unexpected mariachi dubstep interlude.
The likes of “Black Bathing Suit” and “Violets For Roses” offer fresh insight into the smouldering melodrama of her just-so world. Highlights include a wild duet with Miles Kane called “Dealer”, and numerous choice lines such as ‘“Cypto forever!’ screams your stupid boyfriend/Fuckyou, Kevin,” from “Sweet Carolina”.
