More than a single, less than an album
As they hurtle to the 40th anniversary of Goo Goo Dolls' self-titled debut, New York state's Johnny Rzeznik and Robby Takac are still basking in the inclusion of Iris on 2024's Deadpool & Wolverine soundtrack and the new, younger audience it brought.
Seizing the moment, albeit
belatedly after road-testing these songs, they've responded with this
seven-track EP. Less experimental and more radiofriendly than 2022's Chaos In Bloom,
it's an appositely titled collection of galloping, heroic summery anthems. The
biggest is the closing Not
Goodbye (Close My Eyes), but there's also the Iris-esque
ballad Run All
Night, while the stentorian Such A Mystery finds Rzeznik rasping
verses around an almost Buzzcocks-ish chorus.
More than a decade after their
last US Top 10 album, their expanding fan base for whom Iris is a
relatively recent development has enabled them to maintain their arena-level
status. There's nothing here to hasten anyone's decline.
