Miller Anderson was a key component and chief songwriter in The Keef Hartley Band as well as sideman and session player with various artists from Dave Cousins of Strawbs to The Spencer Davis Group and Marc Bolan. His wonderful 1971 solo album Bright City is the finest thing Anderson ever recorded, showcasing his fluid guitar work, songwriting and soulful vocal style reminiscent of Steve Winwood.
Hemlock, whilst on the face of it a new band project, was in truth Anderson's second solo album and picks up where Bright City left off, mining similar soulful, funky country-blues-rock vibes to Traffic. ‘Ship To Nowhere’ and ‘Broken Dreams’ encapsulate the deeply personal lyrics tinged with regret and despondency at the vagaries of the music industry, whilst non-album single ‘Beggar Man’ rocks out in a more upbeat manner. An album worthy of a positive re-evaluation.
The album was recorded in 1973 at Island Studios in London and released on the Deram label.
